About us

Attolight started off to revolutionise cathodoluminescence (CL): design top of the line CL instruments that deliver superior performance, maximum ease-of-use and make quantitative CL possible. The Company firmly believes in the potential of CL and aims at establishing the technology as a standard in-line inspection method in semiconductor industry.

The Company’s core expertise lies in the applications of CL, advanced data analysis, and design & production of integrated CL tools.

Attolight is a company with global presence with systems in Europe, Asia, and North America. The Company  is headquartered at the EPFL Innovation Park where the Attolab is located as well.

Attolight originally spun-off from EPFL’s laboratory of quantum optoelectronics (LOEQ) in 2007. The company was founded by Jean Berney and Samuel Sonderegger in 2008 who both received a docteur ès sciences title from EPFL.

Executive Management

Samuel Sonderegger PhD

Chief Executive Officer & co-founder

Samuel studied at EPFL (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne) and Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon (France) and obtained a MS of Physics from EPFL. His master thesis on the optical properties of semiconductors was conducted at the Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute (Russia). During his PhD at EPFL, he further developed Attolight's ultrafast cathodoluminescence technology and used this technique to advance the understanding of optical properties of nitride based semiconductors. Samuel decided to jump into the entrepreneurial world after his PhD thesis and co-founded Attolight with Jean Berney. Since then he has headed the business development of the company with a strong focus on developing industrial applications of cathodoluminescence.

Sylvain Muckenhirn

VP Business Development
Sylvain is in charge of worldwide business development.
Sylvain has 30 years of experience in the semi-conductor industry in different roles such as Process Engineer, R&D Director, Technical Director, Director of Strategic Marketing and General Manager. He worked for leading semi-conductor companies including KLA Tencor, FEI Company (now Thermo Fisher Scientific), Zygo Corporation and Veeco Instruments, as well as consulting independently for various customers worldwide.

Jean Berney PhD

Chief Technology Officer & co-founder

Jean Berney is the Chief Technical Officer for Attolight’s cathodoluminescence inspection instruments and software. With a primary responsibility to create non-conventional, no-compromise technology that bring unprecedented inspection breakthroughs, Jean’s work is primarily targeted to cathodoluminescence detection and data flux management.

Jean’s  organization is focused on developing and supplying top-notch electron microscopes, spectroscopic devices and data processing algorithms.

From its foundation, Jean invented and prototyped the current line of microscopes. He put in place technological partnerships to bring to the market the current line of cathodoluminescence microscopes. Prior to his role as CTO, Jean received a PhD from the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) for his research of many-body interactions in advanced semiconductor material, using ultrafast spectroscopic methods.

François Requin

Chief Financial Officer
In his career as senior finance executive, François' support has been instrumental for Swiss and French subsidiaries of international sales and manufacturing operations to achieve challenging growth objectives. François has a proven track record of successful missions and assignments, specially within the medical equipment and implantable devices with global companies like Medtronic, Johnson & Johnson/Micrus Endovascular or Biomet.
